A Russian serviceman not only raped a Ukrainian girl during the Russian occupation. He also kidnapped her and turned her into his sex slave in Russia.
The girl spent one year and a half in Belgorod, Russia. She was was a twenty one year old girl from a small village when the Russians occupied the Izyum district of the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. The crime was reported by the communications department of the Kharkiv region police as follows.
In March 2022 a Russian serviceman threatened a local 21 year old girl with his firearm and forced her to have a sexual intercourse with him. The girl refused but it did not stop the Russian soldier. He forced her into an abandoned building and raped her, forbidding to tell anybody about it. In April he came for the girl again and raped her once more, threatening in case of refusal to kill members of her family. Feeling his impunity he decided to take the girl to Belgorod, Russia, and make her his sexual toy. Together with the two other Russian military servicemen with the call signs "Ibrahim" and "Maga" he realized his plan.
So the armed occupiers came to the girl’s house and ordered her to gather her personal belongings and follow them. In case of refusal they threatened to shoot the whole family.
The Ukrainian girl entered Russia through the Verigovka border checkpoint in the Valui district of the Belgorod region.
In Belgorod, the Russian soldier locked the girl in an apartment, barred the windows and balcony with iron bars so that she could not escape. He would come whenever he wanted to beat and rape her. The girl saw no way out and at the beginning of 2023 she attempted to kill herself by drinking boric acid.
The Russian soldier took the girl to hospital where she was provided with assistance and it was then and there that she could see other people for the first time after her captivity. The kidnapped girl told her story to the doctors and asked them for help. But they did not believe her or did not want to believe her. As soon as her physical condition improved the girl was discharged from the hospital and sent "home".
However, miraculously, the victim managed to escape. It turned out that her kidnapper was a deserter and so he was finally detained by the Russian military law enforcement agency for evading military service. After that the girl was able to contact her family and with the help of volunteers she returned to the territory controlled by Ukraine where she told people about her tragic sexual slavery.
Criminal proceedings have been opened for the fact of cruel treatment of the civilian and violations of the laws and customs of the war: sexual violence and illegal deportation.
Since 2014, hundreds of people have been affected by conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine, with the number increasing significantly after Russia’s full- scale invasion on 24th February 2024.
In March 2023, the European Union imposed sanctions on Russian military personnel over sexual violence against women in Ukraine. As usual, Kremlin officials have repeatedly denied allegations of rights violation. Furthermore, during the occupation of Ukrainian territories, Russian military leadership gives orders "go relax" using sexual crimes as a weapon of war.
In March 2024, a pilot project for urgent interim reparations for victims of war-related sexual violence was launched in Ukraine. As of January 27th 2025 as many as 670 applications have been received ( 395 from men, 261 from women, 14 concerning children- 12 girls and two boys).
